Whatever Happened to .. the supporting cast of Friends?

Friends was about six oddly insular characters who rarely let anyone else into their highly caffeinated clique – however over 10 series loads of other faces popped in to Central Perk or Joey’s bed for an episode or two.

So while we pretty much know what Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Matthew Perry are up to I thought it’s time to shine a light on the unsung heroes of the most repeated comedy on digital TV.

After the jump we catch-up with every support actor in Friends – including Chandler’s weird flatmate Eddie, Rachel’s fiancé Barry, Paulo, Janice, Mona, and Mr Heckles.

Just click for more and explore!

I haven’t included some star cameos like George Clooney, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis and even Jean Claude Van Damme as you are probably fairly familiar with what they are up to now.

But I’ve kept in other star cameos like Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon and Freddie Prinze Jr because I’m inconsistent like that (and wanted to research them a bit more).

Elliot Gould as Jack Geller

Elliott was famous for M*A*S*H and had an Oscar nomination for ‘Bob & Carol &Ted & Alice’.

Since Friends he’s starred in Oceans Eleven (and it’s sequels) as Reuben Tishkoff.  He’s also guest-starred on CSI and recently had a hip-replacement.

Elliott has been married three times (twice to the same woman) but is, as far as I know, currently single.

Christina Pickles as Judy Geller

Christina is actually an English actress – her niece Carolyn Pickles starred in Emmerdale. Christina was known for her work on daytime soaps and St Elsewhere during the 80’s.

She also appeared in the He-Man movie ‘Masters of the Universe’ (co-starring with Courteney Cox) and played Romeo’s mum in Bas Luhrman’s ‘Romeo + Juliet’.

Since Friends, Christina has appeared as Lily’s grandmother on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and regularly appears on radio.

Mitchell Whitfield as Barry Farber

Mitchell also appeared in ‘My Cousin Vinny’.

Since Friends he’s appeared on ‘The Suite Life with Zack and Cody’ (the show the Sprouse twins who played Ben Geller went on to star in) and CSI.

Mitchell voiced Donatello in the 2007 ‘TMNT’ movie.

Jennifer Grey as Mindy Farber

(in The One with the Evil Orthodontist)

Jennifer Grey became a star following her lead role in ‘Dirty Dancing’ and her support role in ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ – however a nose-job made her virtually unrecognisable afterwards which affected her career.

She has recently had a career resurgence after winning the 2010 series  ‘Dancing With The Stars’ with professional dancer Derek Hough.

She has since guest-judged on the British version ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

In 1987 Jennifer was with her then-boyfriend Matthew Broderick when his car collided with another in Northern Ireland, killing a mother and her daughter.  Jennifer said she was greatly affected by the incident for a long-time afterwards.

She has been married to Clark Gregg since 2001, they have one daughter.

Jana Marie Hupp as the second Mindy Farber

(in ‘The One with Barry and Mindy’s Wedding’)

Jana had previously played Ensign Pavlik in a few episodes of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’.  Since ‘Friends’ she has starred as Nancy in the TV series ‘Ed’ (2000 – 2004).

Hank Azaria – David (the scientist guy)

Hank is best known for voicing Mo, Apu, Chief Wiggin and Comic Book Guy on ‘The Simpsons’.

He’s also had roles in movies like ‘Birdcage’, ‘American Sweethearts’, ‘Night at the Museum’ and most recently ‘The Smurfs’.

Hank was in a relationship with Helen Hunt from 1994 until they divorced (after one year of marriage) in 2000.  He has a son with his partner Katie Wright.

Jane Sibbett as Carol

Before ‘Friends’ Jane starred a cult sitcom called ‘Herman’s Head’ along with Hanks Azaria (see above) and appeared in the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen film ‘It Takes Two’.

More recently Jane has been working as a documentary producer. She has three children with writer and producer Karl Fink.

Jessica Hecht as Susan

This is a face you may have seen pop up again and again – but never realised where you knew her from.

Since ‘Friends’ Jessica has starred in movies like  ‘Sideways’ and ‘J Edgar’ along with TV shows like ‘The Good Wife’, ‘Desperate Housewives’, ‘CSI’, ‘ER’ and she played Gretchen Schwartz on ‘Breaking Bad’.

She has been married to director Adam Bernstein since 1995. They have two children.

James Michael Tyler – Gunther

Tyler hasn’t followed up with two many roles since the show ended.

What I can tell you is – he lives in Hollywood with his wife Barbara, likes to play the keyboard and recently popped up with Matt LeBlanc in an episode of BBC’s ‘Episodes’.

Maggie Wheeler – Janice

Maggie originally auditioned for the role of Monica but got the recurring part of  Janice instead.

She has also appeared in ‘Ellen’, ‘ER’, ‘The X Files’, ‘Will and Grace’, ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’.

Did you see the ‘Nim’ documentary about the chimp that was raised like a child in the 1970’s?  Maggie used to babysit that chimp when she was 15.

She dated David Duchovny for a long time before he married Téa Leonie.

Her real voice is not like Janice’s – it’s a regular female voice. When Janice was pregnant in ‘Friends’ Maggie really was pregnant.  She has two daughters.

Larry Hankin – Mr Heckles

Prior to ‘Friends’, Larry starred in ‘Escape from Alcatraz’ with Clint Eastwood and had roles in lots of John Hughes movies, including a part as a police officer in ‘Home Alone’.

Larry was also the dog-pound man in ‘Annie’ and the landlord in ‘Pretty Woman’. He was close to getting the part of Kramer in ‘Seinfeld’ but it ended up going to Michael Richards.  In an ‘Inception’ move Larry then played an actor cast as Kramer in a sitcom within the sitcom.

He also played Hologram character ‘Gaunt Gary’ in ‘Star Trek Voyager’. More recently Larry has appeared as junk-yard owner Old Joe on ‘Breaking Bad’ and pops up in a few online sketches with comedy group ‘Magic Hugs’.

He has also starred in TV series ‘The Invisible Man’.  Vincent is married to his high-school sweetheart Diane Shiner, they have two children.

Morgan Fairchild – Nora Tyler Bing (Chandler’s mom)

Morgan was born Patsy Anne McClenny in 1950.  She was Faye Dunaway’s double on ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ and became a big soap star in the 70’s and 80’s with roles in ‘Search For Tomorrow’, ‘Dallas’ (her part Jenna was later played by Priscilla Presley), ‘Flamingo Road’ and later ‘General Hospital’.

Tom Selleck – Dr Richard Burke

Tom Selleck was a star on the back of classic 80’s series ‘Magnum Pi’ – he famously had to turn down the role of ‘Indiana Jones’ because he could not get time away from the series to film.

He’s perhaps best known as one of the three leads in ‘Three Men and a Baby’ and it’s sequel ‘Three Men and a Little Lady’.  He recently said he hopes for a third film called ‘Three Men and a Bride’.

Since ‘Friends’ her biggest role has been as detective Alison Kerry in the ‘Saw’ franchise.

Jennifer Milmore – Lauren (her understudy)

Before her part in ‘Friends’, Jennifer played love-sick teenager Bobby-Lee in ‘Too Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar’.

She has appeared in the odd TV part since but it’s all quiet on her IMDB page since 2006.

Steven Eckholdt – Mark Robinson

Steven’s has had steady work in American TV before and since his part as Rachel’s co-worker Mark in ‘Friends’.

He’s popped up in ‘CSI Miami’, ‘The Practise’, ‘Melrose Place’ and played Doug Westin in ‘The West Wing’.

Paget Brewster – Kathy

Joey’s (and later Chandler’s) girlfriend Kathy was a break-through role for Paget.

She went on to star as Emily Prentiss n ‘Criminal Minds’ from 2006 – 2012.  Her character was actually dropped as a cost-cutting measure at one point but she was brought back due to fans’ demands.

She is living with Steve Damstra, a close friend of her Criminal Minds co-star Matthew Gray-Gubler.

Alison La Placa – Joanna (Rachel’s boss)

Alison is best-known to a US audience as Linda from the 80’s sitcom ‘Duet’ and it’s spin-off ‘Open House’. She has also had parts in ‘ER’, ‘Cheers’,  ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Malcom in the Middle’.

She has been married to Philip Charles McKenzie since 1992. This flattering pic was the most recent one I could find.

Sam McMurray – Doug (Chandler’s boss)

McMurray has appeared in loads of films like ‘Raising Arizona’, ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’, ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ and TV shows like ‘Freaks and Geeks’ and ‘The King of Queens’.

More recently he played ‘Dr Victor Bravenec’ on ‘Breaking Bad’. He does the voice-over on the Duff beer commercials in ‘The Simpsons’.

Tate Donovan – Joshua Burgin

Now we’re not accusing anyone of nepotism – but Tate happened to be dating Jennifer Aniston at the same time as he played her client Joshua on the show.

His first major role was alongside Sean Astin, Billy Zane, Matthew Modine and Harry Connick Jr in ‘Memphis Belle’ (there he is beside the dog).

(I should really do a catch-up with the whole cast, but that is for another day.)

Since ‘Friends’ his biggest roles have been in ‘The O.C’ and ‘Damages’. Tate has also directed episodes of ‘Glee’, ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘Nip/Tuck’.

He was previously engaged to Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston, his marriage to Corinne Kingsbury ended in 2006.

Tate has Irish roots and plays the bodhrán and fiddle in a traditional Irish band called The Descendants.

The couple married in 2000, they have a son and a daughter.  Both Christina and Ben are vegans.  Ben also had a cameo in ‘Friends’ – as Rachel’s date who is only angry when Ross is with him on his own.

Helen Baxendale – Emily Waltham

While unknown in the States at the time, Helen was a big name in the UK and Ireland due to her lead role in ‘Cold Feet’.  Apparently Patsy Kensit was originally offered the role of Ross’ second wife ‘Emily’ but she turned it down.

Since ‘Friends’, Helen has done loads of theatre acting but also turns up on TV the odd time in dramas like ‘Kidnap and Ransom’ and comedies like ‘Dirk Gently’.

Her former co-star James Nesbitt recently said they’d love for Helen to come back for a ‘Cold Feet’ reunion, though it seems unlikely as her character Rachel died in the final episode.

He has three children with her partner David L Wallis. Apparently her first pregnancy and visa issues meant the character of Emily was written out earlier than the ‘Friends’ writers intended.

Winona Ryder – Rachel’s friend Melissa

Winona was a huge star on the back of roles in ‘Beetlejuice’, ‘Heathers’, ‘Edward Scissorhands’, ‘Little Women’ and ‘Girl, Interupted’.

Her arrest for shoplifting in 2001 seemed to affect her career somewhat, and Winona later admitted struggling with nerves.

She returned to the big screen in films like ‘Mr Deeds’, ‘Black Swan’ and ‘Star Trek’ (in which she played Spock’s mum).

Winona was engaged to Johnny Depp in the early 90’s and also had relationships with Dave Pirner (from Soul Asylum) and Matt Damon.

Her actual hair colour is blonde, she just dyes it dark. Apparently she suffers from insomnia and sometimes stays up talking to fellow insomniac Al Pacino on the phone (I hope that’s true).

Susan Sarandon –  Jessica Lockhart

Susan Sarandon was another big star casting.  She was a house-hold name after films like ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’, ‘The Witches of Eastwick’, ‘Thelma and Louise’, ‘Dead Man Walking’ and ‘The Client’.

Susan kept her surname from her first marriage to Chris Sarandon (her maiden name is Tomalin) – see who he later married below!  She then had a baby girl called Eva with Italian filmaker Franco Amurri.  From 1988 was in a long-term relationship with Tim Robbins, they broke up in 2009 and had two sons together.

Susan is an outspoken liberal activist and often fights with her Republican mum about issues like the Iraq War.

Joanna is an award winning musical performer who has appeared in loads of Broadway productions.  She’s been in films like ‘Boogie Nights’, ‘Mr Holland’s Opus’ and ‘The Wedding Planner’.  On TV she’s recently popped up in ‘The Good Wife’.

Well this is a coincidence, Joanna is now married to Chris Sarandon, who was previously married to Susan Sarandon (see above).  Chris is great for trivia – he also played Prince Huperdinck in ‘The Princess Bride’ and voiced Jack in ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’.

He and Joanna have four children between them (all from previous marriages).

George Newbern – Danny

I knew that I knew that face from somewhere!

Before playing Rachel and Monica’s new neighbour in ‘Friends’, George played ‘Bryan McKenzie’ in the ‘Father of the Bride’ films!

Since the show he has popped up in a load of TV shows like ‘CSI’, voiced Superman in cartoons and appeared in ‘Saw VI’.

She has two sons with former partner Arpad Busson.

Reese Witherspoon – Jill Green

Before her role as Rachel’s bratty sister ‘Jill’, Reese was already pretty well known for her roles in ‘Fear’, ‘Pleasantville’ ‘Election’ and ‘Cruel Intentions’ but her huge breakthrough role followed in 2001 with ‘Legally Blonde’.

Since then Reese has appeared in rom-coms like ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ but balanced her CV with dramatic roles, like her Oscar winning part as June Carter Cash in ‘Walk The Line’.

She has three children, Deacon and Ava from her marriage to Ryan Phillipe (that’s her and 13 year old Ava above), and a son called Tennessee from her marriage to Jim Toth.

Michael Rapaport – Gary (Phoebe’s Cop boyfriend)

Michael played a deep sea biologist in ‘Deep Blue Sea’ and played Dick Richie in ‘True Romance’.  He’s best known for his role in the sitcom ‘The War At Home’ and his role as Frank in ‘My Name Is Earl’

Michael is married to Nicole Beattie, and they have two children.

He made headlines in 2005 as he was the landlord who kicked the troubled former American Pie actress Natasha Lyon out of her home.

Alexandra Holden – Elizabeth Stevens (Ross’ student girlfriend)

You might also recognise Alexandra as the anorexic former-beauty queen in ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’ and a Fern Rogers from ‘Sugar and Spice’. She also appeared in this 1997 video from Aerosmith for ‘Hole in my Soul’.

Amanda still appears regularly on TV shows like ‘Bones’ and ‘CSI Miami’.

Kristin Davis – Erin

Kristin Davis popped up for an episode playing a girl that Joey finally wants to commit to, but she loses interest.

Kristin first found fame playing Brooke Armstrong on ‘Melrose Place’, but is best known for playing Charlotte on ‘Sex and The City’.

She admits to being a recovering alchoholic who gave up drink aged 22. She adopted a daughter called Gemma Rose in 2011.

Denise shot to fame with her roles in 90’s films ‘Wild Things’, ‘Starship Troopers’ and ‘The World Is Not Enough’ (the Bond film in which she played a Nuclear physicist called Dr Christmas Jones).

Since ‘Friends’, Denise has had the odd role in films like ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Scary Movie 3′.  She had her own E! reality show and  took part in ‘Dancing With The Stars’ in 2009.

She had a famously rocky marriage to Charlie Sheen which resulted in divorce in 2006.  They have two daughters together and are on much better terms these days.

Eddie Cahill – Tag (Rachel’s toyboy)

Eddie went on to play Detective Don Flack on ‘CSI NY’.

He has a daughter with his partner Nikki Uberti (she was previously married to photographer Terry Richardson)

Melissa George – Molly

Melissa George was well-known in the UK and Australia for her role as Angel in ‘Home and Away’ (but don’t remind her of that, see here).

After moving to Hollywood she got parts in David Lynch’s ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ’30 Days of Night’.

Most recently she appeared in the TV spy drama ‘Hunted’.  Melissa is also an inventor and has made more money from her ‘Style Snaps’ device than from her acting.

Marla Sokoloff– Dina Tribbiani

At age 12 Marla was cast as Stephanie Tanner’s enemy/friend Gia in ‘Full House’. She starred in three episodes of ‘Desperate Housewives’ and appeared in films like ‘Dude, Where’s My Car?’ and ‘Sugar and Spice’.

She lived with her ex James Franco for a few years.  Marla now has a daughter called Elliotte with her husband Alec Puro.

Kathleen Turner – Charles Bing/Helena Handbasket

Kathleen became a star in the 80’s with roles in ‘Body Heat’, ‘Romancing The Stone’, ‘Serial Mom’ and ‘Peggy Sue Got Married’. She also voiced Jessica Rabbit in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’.

Her career declined in the 90’s as she suffered heavily from arthritis and also drank to block out the pain.  Kathleen made a few dodgy choices by turning down big roles like the lead in ‘Ghost’ and ‘Bridges of Madison County’.

One role that proved a highlight was playing the mother in Sofia Coppola’s ‘The VIrgin Suicides’.

In recent years she has found success on the stage. She has a daughter called Rachel Weiss (not the actress) with her ex-husband Jay Weiss (fashion designer Donna Karan was her sister-in-law).

Paul Rudd – Mike Hannigan

In 2012 she was the highest paid TV actress, earning $9 million.  Ellen has a daughter called Stella with her husband Chris Ivery.

Greg Kinnear – Benjamin Hobart

(Nobel Prize winner who is after Ross’s girlfriend Charlie)

Greg started out as an MTV reporter and later became a talk-show host.  His big break was playing Harrison Ford’s younger brother David in the 1995 remake of ‘Sabrina’.  He follows that by playing Meg Ryan’s partner in ‘You’ve Got Mail’.

Greg was Oscar nominated for his part in ‘As Good As It Gets’ opposite Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson.  You’ll also know him from  ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, ‘Invincible’, ‘Stuck On You’ and perhaps the TV mini series ‘The Kennedys’ in shich he played JFK.

Right now Jennifer plays a neighbour on the sitcom ‘2 Broke Girls’.

Danny DeVito – Roy

Danny played a stripper that turned up for Phoebe’s hen-night.

DeVito made his name (and got several awards) playing Louie in the hit 70’s sitcom ‘Taxi’. He’s starred in loads of films like ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’, ‘Batman Returns’, ‘Matilda’ (more on that HERE), and ‘Twins’.  He’s also directed films like ‘Throw Momma From The Train’, ‘Maltida’ and ‘The War of the Roses’. He also voiced Homer’s brother Herb in ‘The Simpsons’.

What you may not know is Danny produced ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Gattaca’, ‘Garden State’, ‘Get Shorty’, and ‘Erin Brockovich’.

He met Cheers and Matilda star Rhea Pearlman in 1971 and they were together until 2012.  They have three children together.

Dermot Mulroney – Gavin

Dermot’s well know for his lead roles in ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’,  and the 1988 western ‘Young Guns’.  More recently he appeared in ‘The Grey’, ‘J Edgar’ and a few episodes of Zooey Deschanel’s comedy ‘New Girl’.

He often gets mixed up with actor Dylan McDermott.

He has a son with his ex-wife, the actress Catherine Keener and has two daughters with his wife Tharita Catule.

Dermot is also a professional cellist and has played on the soundtracks to ‘Mission Impossible 3′ and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’.  He’s in a band called Cranky George with his brother and James Fearnley from ‘The Pogues’.

Selma Blair – Wendy

She played Chandler’s co-worker in Tulsa who tried to seduce him at Christmas.

Selma’s breakthrough role was innocent teenager Cecile in ‘Cruel Intentions’ – perhaps this is her most famous scene?

She later starred in ‘Legally Blonde’, ‘The Sweetest Thing’, ‘Hellboy’ and ‘Hellboy II’.

Selma played Kim in the US remake of Aussie hit ‘Kath and Kim’, which ended after one season.  Right now she appears in Charlie Sheen’s new sitcom ‘Anger Management’.

She was previously married to Frank Zappa’s son Ahmed Zappa but they divorced in 2006.  She has a son with her ex-partner, fashion designer Jason Bleick

  8. I was reading your site from Buzzfeed cause they were lacking (by far!) with Co-Stars of Friends. Interesting fact I saw on 60 minutes about Marlo Thomas: she has a hyperthymesmic memory. She can literally remember every day of her life and every thing that happened on that day. I can remember random trivia about celebrities and facts about random topics. My boyfriend’s family won’t play trivia with me anymore because I always win :(

    • Ah thanks so much for coming over to the site Andi!
I’m a bit of a trivia fiend myself but I suspect you could beat me with the random knowledge. Hope you find more stuff you like on the site, I just started up late last year and am putting loads of work in, hoping that it takes off! Rory
