Home Improvement (1991-1999) was a huge hit sitcom centring on (who I believed at the time was) the coolest man alive, Tim ‘The Toolman’ Taylor.
Tim had a TV show about power tools, an long-suffering wife, three kids (the jock, the smart-ass one, the nerd), and a wise neighbour that peeped over a fence.
Tim also had this weird grunting catchphrase and an attractive assistant in the shape of Pamela Anderson. But more on that later.
Now let’s catch up with all the cast members.
Tim Allen – Tim ‘the Toolman’ Taylor.
The show was based on Tim’s early stand-up routines, having fist taken to the mic back in the 1970′s.
Here are a selection of his grunts.
Since then: Tim is best known today as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story films. He also starred in Galaxy Quest and The Santa Clause movies. He has been married twice and has two daughters (one from each marriage).
Extra info: Tim served time in jail for cocaine possession in the late 70′s
Patricia Richards – Jill, Tim’s eye-rolling, sensible but sound wife.
Since then: Jill has appeared in made-for-tv movies and had roles in The West Wing (Repulican campaign manager Sheila Brooks) and CSI: Special Victims Unit.
She is divorced with three kids – and still looks pretty much the same.
Zachery Ty Bryan - Brad, the eldest ‘jock’ son with a mean mullet
Since then: He has appeared in Smallville (like Jonahtan Taylor Thomas, see below), Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars (also like JTT). Starred opposite Gerard Butler in ‘The Game of their Lives’ and played Clay in ‘Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift’.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas – Middle son Randy – the smart & smart-ass one.
He became a 90′s girl crush favourite before leaving the show in 1998 to pursue his education (was written out as ‘leaving for Costa Rica’). Here are some clips of JTT going from kid to ‘teenage heart-throb’
As I recently posted in our Lion King catch-up Jonathan Taylor Thomas made a few films in his teens and then graduated from Columbia with a degree in History and Politics. He’s since appeared in programmes like Veronica Mars and Smallville, and films like Common Ground.
In 2013 it was announced that will will guest star on Tim Allen’s sitcom ‘Last Man Standing’.
Taran Noah Smith – youngest son and later goth, Mark.
In 2001, aged just 17 he married Heidi Van Pelt who was sixteen years older than him. They set up a vegan food company and restaurant together and divorced in 2007. In February 2012 he was arrested under the suspicion of DUI and possession of marijuana.
He has just been convicted of DUI and hash possession following that arrest earlier this year. Today (Dec 5th) Taran pleaded “guilty” to the drug possession charge and pleaded “no contest” to the DUI charge.
He was sentenced to a 12-hour program for the DUI offense, and a 6-month drug diversion program for the weed charge and also placed on three years probation.
Earl Hindman – Wilson, the neighbour whose face we never fully saw.
Since then: Sadly died of lung cancer in 2003. Here’s that face we never saw on the show.
Richard Karn - Al, Tim’s overly serious work colleague and eventual friend.
Since then: Hosted ‘Family Feud’ (the US version of ‘Family Fortunes) and now hosts ‘Bingo America’. Appeared in The Strokes video for ‘Someday’ (at 54 seconds).
Debbie Duning – Heidi, the second ‘Tool Time Girl’
Since then: Was the reigning champ of ‘American Gladiators:; Celebrity Challenge’ for two years running. Is married to a volleyball player and has two kids.
Pamela Anderson: A Canadian model, she was first ‘Tool Time Girl’, left the role to play CJ on Baywatch.
Since then: Well .. she’s Pamela Anderson. Became hugely successful and the pin-up girl of the 90′s on the back of Baywatch, appeared in Playboy magazine (since 1988 – 2011), had on-off relationship with Tommy Lee (which resulted in her two sons) and married Kid Rock in 2006 but divorced the same year. Her marriage to Rick Saloman was annulled in 2008.
She took part in ‘Dancing With The Stars’ in 2010 and returned in 2012 for a ‘all-star’ competition but was eliminated after a week. Also took part in the Argentinian version but withdrew and is rumoued to be taking part in Dancing on Ice soon.
Are they all still friends? Well, yes – here’s a cast reunion pic from last year
