‘Will & Grace’ (1998 – 2005) started out as a sitcom about a dashing gay lawyer and his neurotic best friend in New York…
.. and unofficially became ‘Jack & Karen’, a sitcom about a camp wannabe Broadway star and a rich, pill-popping, bisexual, sassy alcoholic.
I would have been happier with the sitcom ‘Karen’ to be honest.
Remember that piano intro?
What ever happened to the cast? Find out where they all are now after the jump!
Eric McCormack – Will Truman
Eric is one of those many actors you’d assume is American, but you’d be dead wrong my friend – he’s a Canadian. (Though he now holds duel citizenship so you were kind-of right the first time).
Eric who started out on low-budget moves like ‘The Lost World’ (not the Jurassic Park sequel) and auditioned three times for the part of Ross Gellar in ‘Friends’, but lost out to David Schwimmer.
Clearly he’s still not happy about it.
In 1998 Eric landed the role of Will after the first audition – he says he knew the part was for him when he first read the script -
“What hit me immediately was that this was me. I mean, sexual orientation aside, Will was so much like me. He’s a great host, he’s relatively funny and he has great friends and he’s a good friend to them … the gay issue just wasn’t really a big thing.”
Since the sitcom ended in 2006 he appeared in off-Broadway plays, the TV miniseries ‘The Andromeda Strain’, the failed the sitcom ‘Trust Me’, a sci-fi movie called ‘Alien Trespass’, and guest starred in an episode of ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’.
Eric now plays a schizophrenic neuropsychiatrist who helps the FBI in the crime-drama ‘Perception’. A schizophrenic neuropsychiatrist… Why can’t meddling old folk just be hired in to solve crimes like back in the old days?
He has a son called Finnigan with his wife Janet Leigh Holden.
Debra Messing – Grace Adler
Debra Messing likes to shout ‘I’M ONLY MESSING!’ at her friends faces when she pulls pranks like throwing yoghurt in their hair.
I’m not 100% (or even 2%) sure that’s a fact but I like to believe it’s true.
Debra was a teen beauty queen who was Junior Miss Rhode Island back in the mid 80’s. She got a break in 1995 starring opposite Keanu Reeves in ‘A Walk In The Clouds’, a guest role on ‘Seinfeld’ followed, along with a two-season series called ‘Ned & Stacey’.
Well that looks dreadful.
Grace actually beat Nicollette Sheridan to the role of Grace – Nicolette would later guest-star on the show as Grace’s rival, and went on to play Edie on ‘Desperate Housewives’.
While still on the sitcom, Debra also had small roles on Woody Allen’s 2002 film ‘Hollywood Ending’, ‘The Mothman Prophecy’, ‘Along Came Polly’, and had a lead role in ‘The Wedding Date’.
She has since appeared in ‘The Starter Wife’, and had a lead-role in the high-budget musical drama ‘Smash’ (which was cancelled after two troubled seasons).
She has one son called Roman with her ex-husband Daniel Zelman and is now dating her ‘Smash’ co-star Will Chase.
Megan Mullally – Karen Walker
Ah yes, Megan Mullally you beaut.
Megan’s first job after moving to Hollywood in 1985 was a McDonalds ad with John Goodman.
She had guest roles on ‘Murder She Wrote’ and almost every early 90’s sitcom – and even tried out for the role of Elaine on ‘Seinfeld’.
Following ‘Will and Grace’, Megan has her own talkshow ‘The Megan Mullally Show’ which lasted a year.
She has also guest-starred on ’30 Rock’ and ‘Parks and Recreation’ and in 2007 returned to Broadway in a revival of ‘Young Frankenstein’.
She’s also part of a band called ‘Nancy and Beth’ with her friend Stephanie Hunt.
Megan was married to talent agent Michael Katner in the mid-90’s and has been married to ‘Parks and Rec’ star Nick Offerman (above) since 2003.
Sean Hayes – Jack McFarland
With that name you could probably guess that Sean comes from an Irish-American family. He started out as a classical pianist and moved to LA to become a stand-up comedian in 1995. After a role in the gay comedy ‘Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss’, execs spotted him for the role of Jack.
Since the show ended he’s acted alongside Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman in ‘The Bucket List’, voiced the evil Mr Tinkles in both ‘Cats & Dogs’ movies, did some musical theatre on Broadway, and played one of the ‘Three Stooges’ in the flop 2012 remake.
Sean is also the co-executive producer of the sitcom ‘Hot In Cleveland’ and the fairytale cop-drama ‘Grimm’.
Although never strictly in the closet Sean did not publicly acknowledge he was gay until an interview in The Advocate in 2010.
Shelley Morrison – Rosario Salazar
Shelley started out playing an American Indian on TV back in the 60’s and over the next 30 years regularly played hispanic roles. She told her agent she wouldn’t accept any more ‘maid’ roles just before the call for ‘Will & Grace’ came in.
She has previously battled both lung and breast cancer and is married to writer Walter Dominguez.
Michael Angarano – Elliot
Michael was actually down to the last three to play Anakin Skywalker in ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ (check out what happened to the unfortunate kid who did get the job HERE).
Since the show Michael has appeared in ‘Sky High’, ‘Speak’, ‘Lords of Dogtown’, four episodes of ’24’ and will next be seen in ‘The English Teacher’ opposite Julianne Moore.
As a teenager he dated Kristen Stewart and is now seeing rising English actress Juno Temple
Harry Connick Jr – Leo Markus (Grace’s husband)
Harry Connick Jr got his break into acting with ‘Memphis Belle’ (more on that cast here).
He went on to play a serial killer opposite Sigourney Weaver in ‘Copycat’, a jet fighter pilot in ‘Independence Day’, a love-interest opposite Sandra Bullock in ‘Hope Floats’, and a rejected fella in ‘P.S I Love You’.
In 2012 he played David Haden on ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’.
But of course Harry is best known as a classic crooner – he provided the soundtrack to ‘When Harry Met Sally’ and has sold over 25 million albums worldwide.
He has three daughters with his wife Jill Goodacre, a former Victoria’ Secret model.
Leigh-Allyn Baker and Tom Gallop – Ellen and Rob (Grace’s friends)
Leigh-Allyn also had a recurring role as Hannah Webster in ‘Charmed’, and now provides the voice of Abby the cow on ‘Back At The Barnyard’.
She and her husband Keith have two sons.
Tom has gone on to appear in ‘The Bourne Supremacy’ and ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ as Tom Cronin, Pamela Landy’s assistant. He’s also had guest roles in ‘Bones’ and ‘NCIS Los Angeles’.
And if you have 47 mins 47 seconds to spar, here’s the gag reel for all seven seasons!
The cast of ‘Will & Grace’ we salute you!
