A big dumb sci-fi action movie or a stinging critque of blind US nationalism and militarisation?
Well, ‘Starship Troopers’ it’s a bit of both actually – with a healthy dollop of unisex shower scenes thrown in for good measure.
Paul Verhooven’s 1997 adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s sci-fi novel slyly turned the book’s central theme on its head – the novel has been accused of being pro-war, facism, and military rule, but the film takes a tongue-in-cheek approach which Paul says was his way of “playing with fascism or fascist imagery to point out certain aspects of American society… of course, the movie is about ‘Let’s all go to war and let’s all die.'”
Let’s not get bogged down in the political subtext – it is mostly about beautiful people blowing up bugs.
After the jump check out where those photogenic young soldiers are now!
Casper Van Dien – Johnny Rico
Casper Van Dien grew up on Van Dien street in New Jersey – which happened to be named after his great-grandfather. Apparently he got into loads of fights in school over his perfect ‘Ken-doll’ good looks – we’ve all been there.
Before ‘Starship Troopers’, he had roles in ‘Beverly Hills 90210′, a James Dean TV biopic and the soap ‘One Life To Live’.
Since his breakthrough role he starred in a new TV version of ‘Tarzan’ (above), Tim Burton’s ‘Sleepy Hollow’, he also played Patrick Bateman (the role Christian Bale played in ‘American Psycho’) in ‘The Rules of Attraction’ but his scenes were cut.
In 2008 Casper returned for ‘Starship Troopers: Marauder’, the third film in the franchise.
He has a son and daughter with his first wife and two daughters with his second wife Catherine Oxenberg. He and Catherine once appeared in their own reality show called ‘I Married A Princess’, as her mother is Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia.

Before ‘Starship Troopers’, Dina had roles in ‘Beverly Hills 90210′ and ‘Johnny Mnenomic’.

(Check out other Friends supporting cast members here)

Denise Richards – Carmen Ibanez
‘Starship Troopers’ was Denise’s first major role – she went to become a late 90’s pin-up with parts opposite Neve Campbell in ‘Wild Things’, Kirsten Dunst in ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’, and Pierce Brosnan in ‘The World Is Not Enough’. Denise famously played a nuclear physicist in that Bond film, with the unlikley name Dr Christmas Jones. Cue the terrible puns…
She appeared in the horror ‘Valentine’, ‘Scary Movie 3′, had a small role in ‘Love Actually’ (see here) and was Ross and Monica’s hot cousin in ‘Friends’.
She had her own E! reality show in 2008 and took part in the 2009 season of ‘Dancing With The Stars’, she was eliminated second.
Denise began dating Charlie Sheen after guest starring with him on ‘Spin City’ in 2001. They have two daughters together and divorced in 2006. She is now on much better terms with Charlie and she has temporary custody of his twin sons from his marriage to Brooke Mueller (while their mom is getting help for her substance abuse). He has a daughter from his first marriage and a daughter from his second. Michael has also twice survived cancer.
