‘Frasier’ (1993 – 2004) is now in the comedy graveyard (aka on constant repeat on digital channels), but unlike say ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’, it won’t drop your IQ down to the level of yoghurt. If anything, a bit of the Crane brothers on a afternoon will probably boost your vocabulary along with a few belly laughs.
Few would bet that a comedy about fussy, camp and snobby psychiatrists would be a hit with the US public – but against the odds, Frasier went on to the most successful TV spin-off ever.
By the way, how uncomfortable does this ‘natural’ photoshoot look?
You can just about hear them screaming for their agents through those forced smiles.
The character of Frasier Crane was first introduced to ‘Cheers’ in 1984 as one of Diane’s many unsuccessful dates and he was only meant to hang around for six episodes.
Producers liked the character so much that Frasier stayed supping pints in that bar until ‘Cheers’ ended in 1993. His ice-cold wife Lilith was later introduced, here’s their first kiss.
When ‘Cheers’ ended Frasier became the unlikely subject of a spin-off series set in Seattle.
Over 11 series we saw the booming psychiatrist grow closer to his ex-cop dad, have weekly romantic misunderstandings, drink gallons of fancy coffee, see his brother lust after and then marry his dad’s physiotherapist, endure a decade-long feud with a Jack Russell, and finally fly to Chicago to find love.
Here’s the last ever scene.
But what has happened to the cast since?
Find out after the jump!
Kelsey Grammer – Frasier Crane
Between ‘Cheers’ and ‘Frasier’, Kelsey played the role of Dr Frasier Crane for 20 years, something that probably led an audience to believe that both men are similar in character, they are not (see coke habit and wives below).
During the 90’s Kelsey also popped up in ‘The Simpsons’ as murderous Sideshow Bob.
Since ‘Frasier’ ended, Kelsey’s had a few flop sitcoms with ‘Back To You’ and ‘Hank’, but he won a Golden Globe for his role in the drama ‘Boss’.
He now has plans to make a sitcom with ‘Bad Boys’ star Martin Lawrence. I’m not holding out high hopes for that one.
In cinema, he was Beast in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ (above) and is set to play the villain in the upcoming ‘Transformers 4′.
While Frasier had a bit of a caffeine and opera addiction, Kelsey went for something stronger. He was arrested several times due to his big drink and cocaine problem during the 90’s and even spent time in jail for cocaine possession. Cast and crew on ‘Frasier’ staged interventions a few times, writer Dan O’Shannon explains what it was like on set
“He would ooze into the studio, his life all out of sorts. Jimmy would say “Action,” and he would snap into Frasier and expound in this very erudite dialogue and be pitch-perfect. And Jimmy would yell “Cut!” and he would ooze back into Kelsey—glazed-over eyes, half asleep, going through whatever he was going through. It was the most amazing transformation I’d ever seen.”
He has been married four times (a dance instructor, stripper, former Playboy model and air-hostess) and has five children and one grandchild.
He and his most recent wife Kayte recently attracted criticism for bringing their daughter to the Playboy mansion for party as they couldn’t find a babysitter.
David Hyde Pierce – Niles Crane
You may not have seen David as often but you’ve probably heard him. He voiced a stick insect in ‘A Bug’s Life’, Doctor Doppler in ‘Treasure Planet’ and Abe Sapien in ‘Hellboy’. He also joined Kesley Grammer in an episode of ‘The Simpsons’, playing Sideshow Bob’s brother Cecil.
DId you know he was also in ‘Sleepless in Seattle’? He played Meg Ryan’s brother in a brief scene.
He is married to TV writer, director and producer Brian Hargrove. He first publicly referenced the relationship while winning a Tony award in 2007.
He and Frasier co-star John Mahoney are godparents to Jane Leeves (Daphne’s) son.
Jane Leeves – Daphne Moon
Before ‘Frasier’, Jane had a role on ‘The Benny Hill Show’ in the early 80’s.
She went to the States and landed a recurring role on ‘Murphy Brown’ before getting the part of Daphne.
Since ‘Frasier’, she set up a production company with former co-star Peri Gilpin (Roz) called ‘Bristol Cities’ (cockney rhyming slang for ‘titties’ apparently). They made a US version of ‘The Vicar of Dibley’ starring Kirsty Alley but it didn’t take off.
She returned to acting with a guest role as a therapist on ‘Desperate Housewives’ and now stars alongside Betty White in ‘Hot In Cleveland’.
Jane has two children with her husband TV exec Marshall Coben, one of the pregnancies was explained in ‘Frasier’ as Daphne suddenly gaining weight. It was not very convincing.
She also lives beside her best friend and former co-star Peri Gilpin.
Peri Gilpin – Roz Doyle
Roz could have looked very different – Lisa Kudrow from ‘Friends’ was originally cast in the part but was recast during filming of the pilot episode.
Since ‘Frasier’, Peri has appeared in guest roles on ‘Desperate Housewives’, ‘Law and Order’, ‘CSI’ and ‘Medium’. She won a Gracie award for her role on ‘Make It Or Break It’.
If you’re a gamer you may have heard her voice Jane Proudfoot in ‘Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within’.
She has twins with her husband, an artist called Christian Vincent. She lives beside her former co-star and best friend Jane Leeves, who she set up a production company with.
John Mahoney – Martin Crane
As you may have guessed from the name, John has an Irish dad, but you may not have known that he grew up in Manchester.
His older sister Vera had moved to the States as a war bride and she agreed to sponsor John so he could come over. He studied at Quincy University, joined the US army, taught English and then became an editor in a medial journal. He later took up acting as he wasn’t happy in his career.
Aside from ‘Frasier’, John also voiced Dr Rober Terwilliger in an episode of ‘The Simpsons’, playing the father of Sideshow Bob and Sideshow Cecil (Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce).
Since the show he has mostly focused on theatre work but has guest starred in ‘Hot In Cleveland’, ‘ER’, and ‘In Treatment’.
He has never married and says watching his parents argued turned him off the idea.
Dan Butler – Bulldog
Like his co-star David Hyde Pierce, Dan is openly gay and while in his 20’s he wrote a play about coming out called ‘The Only Thing Worse You Could Have Told Me’.
Since the show he has had guest roles in ‘House’, ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ and ‘Without a Trace’.
His long-term partner is producer Richard Waterhouse.
Moose – Eddie
Moose won the role on ‘Frasier’ after only six month of training. He actually received more fan-mail than all his human co-stars.
Moose’s son Enzo took over the role of ‘Eddie’ in season 8, and Moose spent the last six and a half years of his life in retirement with his trainers and Jill, the dog from ‘As Good As It Gets’. He died in 2006.
Moose’s other son Moosie lives with Frasier co-star Peri Gilpin. Enzo went on to star with Frankie Muniz in ‘My Dog Skip’, he died in 2010.
The cast of ‘Frasier’, we salute you!
