‘Kenan and Kel’ (1996-2000) was a Nickleodeon teen sitcom much like a human ‘Pinky and the Brain’ but without much brain. The ‘All That’ spin-off followed high-school Kenan who worked in a grocery store part-time and his orange-soda loving, dumb best friend Kel.
Unfortunately the lads never grasped Ant & Dec’s golden rule about standing in the correct name order, and so here are .. Kel and Kenan…
Clearly nobody on set suffered from enough OCD.
Oh and Coolio sang the theme tune! (Apologies for dodgy vid, tis all YouTube had to give me)
But are Kenan and Kel still best friends to this day? Find out what they’re up to after the jump!
Kenan got his first break in the 1994 film ‘D2: The Might Ducks’ alongside Emilio Estevez and (future Dawson’s Creek star) Joshua Jackson.
While the sitcom was on air, Kenan and Kel also made a critical flop called ‘Good Burger’.
Since the show ended he had the lead role in the critical flop ‘Fat Albert’ and had a supporting role in the critical flop ‘Snakes On A Plane’.
I feel I’m using the phrase ‘critical flop’ a lot today – never fear as things picked up when Kenan landed a job on the critically acclaimed (most of the time) ‘Saturday Night Live’.
His former co-star Kel auditioned at the same time but didn’t make it. Awkward.
In fact Kenan has been on SNL for over ten years now – and he still does pretty much the same thing in every single sketch.
In 2011 he married Christina Evangeline.
Oh and he’s no longer in touch with his former co-star. More on that below…
After the sitcom ended Kel provided the voice of T-bone on ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog’.
He also popped up as a valet alongside former ‘Clueless’ star Stacey Dash in Kanye West’s video for ‘All Falls Down’. (at 25 seconds)
In 2011 he co-wrote, co-produced and starred in a martial-arts-comedy called ‘Dance Fu’. It went straight to DVD. Kel then appeared in ‘Attack of the Show!’ before it was cancelled in 2012 and has also provided voices on a few cartoons.
So what about the lads’ friendship?
There isn’t one.
In 2012 Kel revealed that Kenan is NOT keen on a reunion. He told TMZ -
“The truth is Kenan does not want to be seen with me in any form of media, or even have my name mentioned around him.”
“There is no bad blood on my side, I’m not declining a reunion, I know the fans love the show and would love to see some type of appearance with us … I just don’t see that ever happening because of how he really feels.”
Kel has two children with his first wife Tyisha Hampton-Mitchell, who he got divorced from in 2005. He is now married to a rapper called Asia Lee.
He is a devout Christian and describes himself on his Twitter as a ‘True Man of God’ and a ‘Professional Christian’.
Kenan and Kel, we wish you were still buddies, but anyway – we salute you!
